Lightbox Effect

PEG (polyethylene glycol), PPG (propylene glycol) e i loro derivati (indicati con un numero che segue la sigla, per esempio PEG-32): vengono ottenuti con lo stesso processo chimico di etossilazione e comportano pertanto problemi simili ai tensioattivi etossilati. Tendono ad aumentare la permeabilità dell'epidermide, favorendo l'assorbimento di eventuali sostanze nocive presenti nel prodotto o nei prodotti usati contemporaneamente.

"Utilizzo dei polietilenglicoli in prodotti cosmetici e farmaceutici:

  • Unguenti: usati come emulsionanti
  • Compresse: vengono utilizzati a questo scopo per le loro proprietà plasticizzanti, infatti unite ai polimeri utilizzati per la produzione di film per compresse possono aumentare le proprietà plastiche del film di rivestimento della compressa. La presenza di PEG liquidi nel film riduce però le proprietà gastroresistenti del film stesso.
  • Creme: usati come emulsionanti
  • Shampoo: usati come emulsionanti
  • Detergenti per il corpo: usati come emulsionanti

In detergenti e shampoo sono utilizzati per ottenere emulsioni viscose, mentre nelle creme consentono di ottenere emulsioni con effetto emolliente e umettante.
L'effetto è solo apparente, poiché non apporta effettiva idratazione, rivestendo la pelle di una pellicola che non le permette lo scambio con l’aria.
Diversi studi dimostrano che i PEG possono essere molto pericolosi: da semplici effetti irritanti sino al rischio di provocare tumori.
Di seguito riportiamo la lista dei PEG su cui sono stati censiti i potenziali effetti tossici: i dati sono stati elaborati dall’assocazione statunitense Environmental Working Group (EWG), tra le più importanti al mondo attive nella tutela dei consumatori dalle sostanze tossiche presenti nei prodotti commerciali. I dati sono consultabili (e verificabili) nel loro sito dedicato ai cosmetici DeepSkin.com, dove per ogni PEG sono indicati gli studi scientifici in base ai quali è stata indicata la potenziale tossicità del composto.
Leggere sempre le etichette dei cosmetici, ove possibile evitare sempre i prodotti hce contengono i PEG o almeno controllare che siano tra quelli indicati nella lista che segue.

Lista dei PEG ad alto rischio di tossicità: sono messi in ordine dal più tossico al meno, ma sono TUTTI a rischio ELEVATO di tossicità secondo la EWG, che attribusice l'intervallo da 10a 7 agli additivi ad ELEVATO RISCHIO. 
Sono indicati il nome commerciale ed i sinonimi con cui potrebbe essere indicato nelle etichette: controllate con attenzione!
In generale EVITATE di acquistare prodotti che nella lista degli ingredienti presentano nomi con il la dicitura "PEG": si tratta comunque sempre di composti sintetici, "polimeri" che ci spalmiamo sulla nostra pelle!
